What a great program! Such an honor to be invited as one of the panelist for National Coming Out Day along with Gary E. Keating (Founder of Fort Lauderdale Gay Men's Chorus), Terry Dyer (Development Director SunServe Social Services) and moderated by Jason Hughes (executive director of ArtServe).

This panel came after a screening of the documentary short film, Open Dialogues: Stories From the LGBTQ Community, produced by the Art and Culture Center/Hollywood and directed by award-winning Miami-based filmmaker, Freddy Rodriguez.

“Olokun” This piece was created for a Juneteenth Celebration produced by Project Wtiness – The Lynching Eye. One out of four visual artist painting for this event, the route I chose to take was more story-telling and symbolic.

This piece symbolized the present slaves looking forward to the future of the baby (future generations) being born free, shackles broken. While the essence of Olokun watching the past, present, and future.

About the name: The piece name was taken from a Yoruba Orisha. Olokun is the patron saint of Africans that were carried away during the Trans – Atlantic Slave Trade. Olokun is also a protector of the living, dead, and the unborn.

Niki Lopez is a Afro-Latina, Queer, award-winning interdisciplinary Visual Artist, Curator, Activist, Social Practitioner, Cultural Programmer and mother. Known for her vibrant color palette, masks and a collection of works dealing with some of her past traumas and healing through the arts.

Niki has donated artwork to support various causes such as World AIDS MUSEUM, Human Rights Campaign and Equality Florida.

The 2019 Co-Grand Marshall of Wilton Manors/Stonewall Pride as the 'Future of Advocacy’ and a 2020 recipient of Broward County’s Arts & Culture Visionaries Award by ArtServe.

Lopez hosts and produces “The Circle” a video podcast sharing stories of our creative community, activists & social entrepreneurs.

Super excited, honored and grateful to be one of the awardees for Our Fund LGBTQ Arts & Culture Grant. This grant will support a year-long series of What's Your Elephant programming that includes art making workshops, community chats, interactive arts, virtual and some in-person showcases, that will culminate in 2022 that will be centered around various LGBTQ 'elephant' in the room topics.

Our small but mighty team will collaborate with a few community partners such as:
Ujima Men's Collective, Afro Pride Federation, Black Lesbians Archives and the World AIDS MUSEUM and Educational Center. As well as creative colleagues such as artist and curator Khaulah Naima Nuruddin.

What's Your Elephant is a movement that uses the arts to create safe spaces to address the unspoken. We provoke awareness and facilitate discussions unveiling unaddressed topics including, but not limited to; gender, discrimination and abuse. Included in that focus is breaking the stigmas connected to mental health and counseling. It shows us how art can heal, art can be a tool to start a conversation and start to unpack the things we and the world around us are challenged with. Art is a form of advocacy and can be used to build understanding and community.
